Some days as a Peace Corps Volunteer you
might be excitingly tearing through your school’s old English curriculum with
your co-teachers, rehashing and reworking the document to put in place a stronger
curriculum across the entire institution to develop a solid English program
that the entire school is proud of.
Some days you might be going door to door
gathering feedback and support for a secondary project in an attempt to make a
positive, lasting impact in your community long after you’ve left your site and
returned to the United States.
Some days you might give the community a
good hearty laugh while trying out your dance skills or telling a funny story
in the local language, replete with words not recognized outside of the town.
Some days you might lift the spirit of a neighbor,
student, or co-teacher by a kind word, a smile or the gift of a piece of
chocolate.
And some days you might – after a full day
of failed attempts at progress, half-hearted promises, no running water,
monotonous food, unceasing sweat, dirt, glaring sun and blaring noise – be
lucky enough just to catch a Mexican standoff between two geckos crawling on
the wall.
You feeling lucky, punk? |
